CHET RUDE - SANTA BARBARA, CA 10-15-53

Chet (AKA: Chester) is the author of the 2nd edition Big Book Story, "IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN WORSE."
Chet recorded this AA talk in Santa Barbara, California on October 15th, 1953. Chet begins his talk by thanking Cliff Walker, Chuck Chamberlain and the others for making this event possible. He says he feels he is very lucky. He's never been in jail or a sanitarium because of his drinking. But all that he needed to determine that he was an alcoholic was to hear that first step; He was powerless over alcohol and his life was definitely unmanageable. Chet says that when he first joined AA he was told three things; to attend meetings regularly, never turn down a 12 Step call, and to share the message whenever he was asked. The spiritual aspect of this program appealed to Chet very much and he was willing to do anything it took to get in touch with a higher power. He says that he indeed did have a spiritual experience when he heard 7000 people say The Lord's Prayer in unison at the First International AA Conference in Cleveland in 1950. Chet recites an inspirational message called "Just for Today." At the end of his talk Chet says, "Just as we had an obsession with the saloons and the bottles, may we now have an obsession with the 12 Steps that help us maintain our sobriety. Thank you very much." Because of the age of the original tape, the quality of this recording is somewhat less than perfect, however the words are understandable and Chet's message is clear.
