ADDICTED - A COMEDY OF SUBSTANCE
This is the CD version of our DVD by the same name. It’s the stand-up comedy of Mark Lundholm. Lacing his dialogue with great one-liners Lundholm is an observant, clever write, and a terrific performer. He’s aggressive, funny and charming. He uses humor to tell his story but he never ignores the pain and anger underneath. “Addicted” is an unexpected little hit because it speaks directly to people struggling with addictions ranging from drugs to sex to food to work to the Internet, as well as general theater audiences who were entertained by its pointed comedy and provocative observations. This recoding is rated R for some strong language.

ADDICTION - THE SACRED DISEASE - DR M SCOTT PECK
In this lecture, Dr Peck puts forth the proposition, that man as a being, likes to get “high” as a way of reaching back into the Garden of Eden in an attempt to get closer with God. He relates the whole addiction/spirituality connection to Dr Jung talking with Rowland Hazard way back in the 1930s. Even though this lecture is about addiction in general, Dr Peck frequently refers to the Alcoholics Anonymous model as an example, because as he says, “AA is the perfect model for the program for spiritual conversion.” He also puts forth the proposition that the alcoholic is not only powerless after he takes that first drink, but at times is actually powerless BEFORE he takes that first drink. Dr Peck believes that “God deliberately created alcoholism and alcoholics in order that they would in turn create AA, thereby spearheading the community movement which will be the salvation for us all.”

ALCOHOL, DRUGS, WITHDRAWAL & RECOVERY
On this recording, you’ll hear about many aspects of the drugs; Alcohol, Amphetamines, Hallucinogens, Valium, PCP, Heroin, Tranquilizers, and many more. Recorded at a treatment center, this is a very thorough lecture given by expert in the field of drug abuse. She discusses how detoxing is done depending on what type of chemical the person has been abusing. She talks about how important the “half-lives” of any particular drug are in helping a person going through withdrawal. Vitamin therapy during recovery is discussed. If you’re interested in the characteristics of a wide variety of drugs, you’ll get a lot out of this recording.

ALCOHOLISM - THE GENETIC CONNECTION
This is a great lecture by a physician who has spent over twenty years in the field of alcoholism and chemical addiction. He clearly states his belief as this; we are born with a predisposition toward chemical dependency rather than developing it because of environmental factors. He speaks in depth about how different drugs will affect people differently. He discusses how different ethnicities are more likely to develop alcoholism and addiction than others. For example; Italy consumes more alcohol per capita but Italians have the lowest rate of alcoholism. He ends the talk with the humorous line, “The next time around be more careful who you choose as your ancestors.”

EUPHORIC RECALL
This interesting lecture is given by a very knowledgeable man who also happens to be a physician, a psychiatrist and an alcoholic. This talk is mainly about recreational drugs such as alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, etc. The doctor says that for many alcoholics and addicts that very first experience with their drug of choice is a magical experience and it’s that feeling of euphoria that the subconscious mind is planning on chasing again and again from that time on. The memory of the “Cloud Nine Effect” is very hard to shed. The doctor says that, “Addiction is the pursuit of pleasure in the absence of freedom.” This is a very interesting talk about how “Euphoric Recall” is still one of the biggest stumbling blocks in recovery.

FOUNDER'S DAY ALKATHON - AKRON, OH 1990
This recording is a great way to hear many AA members sharing the shortened version of their experiences with alcohol and recovery. Several people speak on this CD. The first man to speak is Wild Bill from Chicago who speaks quite a bit about childhood rejection. The next speaker is a long-timer named George who tells about “hurting” and how simple the program can be if you realize that you just don’t want to hurt anymore. Next up is Jimmy with 10 years of sobriety and recalls his very first Founder’s Day. A very grateful man from Sidney, Australia speaks next. Then Bob speaks about always relying on the Big Book when things aren’t going right for him. A woman in the program since 1968 from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania speaks next, her name is Elizabeth and she speaks with a thick European accent. She stresses that the program should be kept simple. Then Tony gets up to the microphone and explains how he used to drink two cases of beer every day before recovering. Old-timer and entertaining guy, Moses speaks next. Rick talks next about choosing to stay in the program because he prefers to stay “alive.” Kevin from Chicago speaks next and then John wraps up the recording with his talk and feeling very strongly that, “Whenever anyone reaches out for help, the hand of AA should always be there.” There’re a lot of positive feelings on this recording from a wide variety of AA Members.

FREEMAN CARPENTER
The name, “Freeman Carpenter,” is a pseudonym used by the man who made this recording. At the time of this recording he had 53 years of sobriety. Freeman tells about the day he had his first drink which was when his alcoholism took off. Later in the recording he tells about the day he took his last drink which is when his recovery began. Freeman grew up in poverty in the suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts. His mother was a tyrant and his father was very fearful of everything. When Freeman took his very first drink, he felt the hole in his stomach close up. Alcohol was the answer to all his problems. His formerly drunken brother-in-law was the person who introduced Freeman to Alcoholics Anonymous. Toward the end of this recording, Freeman shares his gratitude for all that AA has done for him.

In this talk by Dr Anderson, we learn several things about the historical perspective on alcohol and drug use. Man has used psychoactive drugs throughout history. HOW TO DEAL WITH AN ALCOHOLIC - FATHER VAL LAFRANCE
On this recording, Father Val, an alcoholic himself, talks about how to deal with an alcoholic. He first talks about confronting the alcoholic. He is a strong supporter of “tough love.” He says the best thing to happen to an alcoholic is being forced to confront a crisis. Father Val then talks about intervention. Intervention is never easy but it’s still much better than the life the active alcoholic continues to live everyday. Surrender is a “must” before an alcoholic can begin to recover. He believes that in most cases, the longer an alcoholic stays in a treatment center, the better. The 28 day programs are usually not enough. When all is said and done, Father Val says he believes that the recovering addict is a truly blessed person because they have been given a chance at spirituality that most non addictive people never receive.

THE SERENITY PRAYER EXPERIENCE
Experience the beauty and power of the Serenity Prayer. On this very powerful CD, Charles J. Severico, MD helps you to experience the powerful SERENITY PRAYER in a most profound and inspiring manner. Dr. Severico begins by dividing the prayer into its three main concepts: Serenity, Courage, and Wisdom. His rich and artistic presentation uses affirmations, music, poetry, and timeless truths to create a supportive atmosphere and promote an inner resonance with each concept. About halfway through this CD you will arrive at a powerful place within your thoughts. Here, you create an inspired future and affirm your commitment to allowing your life to unfold in a way that is best for you. This CD is especially useful during recovery from alcohol addiction. Since certain portions of this CD lead the listener into "inner experiences with eyes closed" it should not be listened to while driving or when involved in activities requiring full attention.

THE SPIRITUAL DISEASE
This is a recording of a lecture about alcoholism and addiction. The title is: THE SPIRITUAL DISEASE. This is a talk in front of a live audience by Doctor Eli Pike. Doctor Pike has studied addictions and spirituality for many years and shares his knowledge in this unique recording. In this talk he focuses on the idea that addiction and alcoholism are not just physical or emotional problems but are truly spiritual disorders. The Doctor explains the tendency for individuals to substitute addictions for a true relationship with a higher power. He shares his beliefs about the importance of the community style fellowship of the Alcoholics Anonymous program. Doctor Pike demonstrates how the addicted personality can reroute his destructive tendencies into a more productive and fulfilling lifestyle by re-establishing his connection to a greater power. TORMENTED WOMEN
This is a unique recording. We took this right off of an LP record that was made way back in 1959. The sound quality is great. The full title is: TORMENTED WOMEN – THE TRUTH ABOUT THE FEMALE ALCOHOLIC. It was recorded by Edward J McGoldrick, an “authority” on alcoholism. There is no mention of Alcoholics Anonymous at all but we included it here because we thought that it was interesting to hear how alcoholism was viewed back in the late 1950s. McGoldrick says that the female is very often the, “Hidden” alcoholic just because she is a woman. He warns the listener not to play the record until she is completely sober. The first thing he tells her is to, “Get rid of your ego.” McGoldrick then tells the story of, “Sally.” He tells how Sally was a really hardcore alcoholic before using his method of recovery. He makes a very anti-AA statement by claiming that alcoholism is NOT a sickness or disease. “It is the drinker’s fault that she is in that situation. He teaches her how to relax. McGoldrick cover his program of a, “Mental Diet” which consists of seventeen steps. One step is to be practiced every day for seventeen straight days. His premise is that at the end of that period the female drinker will be cured of her alcoholism. It’s kind of sad when you think of how many women may have been led astray by this way of thinking. Still, it’s an interesting recording.
