CHARLIE PARMLEY - COLUMBUS, GA 4-4-86
This Alcoholics Anonymous talk is given by Charlie Parmley of Joe and Charlie Big Book Study fame. Joe is not on this recording and this is not a Big Book Study. Recorded in Columbus, Georgia on April 4th, 1986 at the 1st Chattahoochee Valley Conference, Charlie shares his story of what it was like, what happened, and what it’s like now. Charlie begins his talk by announcing that he has been sober for 6001 days. He defines himself as an AA fundamentalist. He went from being a shy little awkward boy to a very brave Casanova. He ended up in the back seat of a car with a girl. He very humorously says that in retrospect he feels that this was his first “spiritual experience.” Alcohol had done for him what he couldn’t do for himself. He gives an excellent explanation as to why alcoholics have an allergy to alcohol. Charlie suffered through many years of tortured drinking. Then eventually, in desperation, Charlie uttered a prayer that would change his life. He woke up in a hospital and asked that his obsession to drink be taken away. Towards the end of his talk, Charlie says he had always been careful when talking to a newcomer about God. Until his sponsor told him not to worry about it. “If someone is run off by God, whiskey will run him back in here every damn time.”

CHARLIE PARMLEY - PORTLAND, OR 1-2-88
In this talk, Charlie tells his story and states that he’s proud to be an AA fundamentalist. As a child he was never able to fit in with the people around him. He tells about his first drinking experience in quite a bit of detail. His father had once given him a warning that if he continues to drink like he does, he’s going to end up like many of the other Parmleys, drunken alcoholics. Charlie tells about his spiritual experience in a hospital, his surrender and his first prayer to a higher power. Charlie’s first AA meeting was at the Borderline group. He later found out that it was not for borderline alcoholics, but was located on the state line. Charlie is very appreciative of the Al Anon program and says that in his opinion, when the spouse is a member of Al Anon, the alcoholic has a much better chance of staying sober. At the end of his talk Charlie says that if he can do his best to do God’s will, then God will give him everything he needs to be happy, “He hasn’t failed me yet.”

CHARLIE PARMLEY - TORONTO, CANADA JUNE 1997
This is Charlie’s story as only he can tell it. It contains a little humor but is mostly a very sincere talk about what alcohol had done to his life. He tells a very detailed story about his first drunk at age 14. Charlie believes that he had his first spiritual experience in the back seat of a car that same night as his first drunk. He makes it very clear that you cannot just stop drinking. You must replace all of those compulsions to drink with positives, like the AA program. Charlie goes over all twelve steps. This is really one of the best AA talks you’ll ever hear.

At the very beginning of the recording Charlie says, “It’s sure good to be sitting here in Akron, Ohio getting ready to talk about the thing we love the most, the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous… I’m positive we’ll get quite emotional once in a while…. To think about doing a Big Book Study back where it all started kind of blows our minds. We’re tickled to death to be here”

JOE McCOY - JOPLIN, MO 12-10-99
Joe recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous talk at the 19th Traditional Winter Holiday in Joplin, Missouri. Joe speaks briefly about the history of AA and says that he believes that AA actually started when Dr Jung first spoke with Rowland Hazzard. Joe talks about his extremely poor upbringing and his father’s severe alcoholism. He talks about some really horrible things he saw as a child while visiting his father in a hospital for the criminally insane. Joe’s drinking got so bad in his later years that he would frequently see animals in his bedroom. Joe talks about the time he attended a Big Book Study and first met Joe McQuaney, the original Joe of the Joe and Charlie Big Book Study recorded series. He feels very proud that the alcoholism “chain” has been broken in his family because his grandchildren have never seen him take a drink. Joe ends his talk with a very heartfelt story.

JOE McCOY - PENSACOLA BEACH, FL 9-14-02
This is the newer Joe of the Joe and Charlie Big Book Studies. Joe has a very soothing voice even though he has had some very rough times in his life. He says his father had an obsession to drink and his mother had an obsession to see that his father did not drink. Every time his father took a drink his mother went through a personality change. Joe talks quite a bit about his father’s alcoholism and growing up in extreme poverty in the South. Joe talks about alcoholism being an entire belief system in the way you look at things in life, just like Communism or Capitalism. He didn’t realize how “uninformed” he was about many things in life until after he joined AA and got sober. Joe’s sponsor once told him if he was unable to find a power GREATER than himself, at least try to find one OTHER than himself. At the end of his talk, he says that one of the most important things that he’s learned in AA is how to interact with other people.

JOE McQUANEY - LITTLE ROCK, AR 1986
This Alcoholics Anonymous talk is given by Joe McQuaney of Joe and Charlie Big Book Study fame. Charlie is not on this recording and this is not a Big Book Study. Recorded in 1986 in Little Rock, Arkansas, Joe shares his message of what it was like, what happened, and what it’s like now. Like Charlie, Joe’s personal story is delivered from the heart. Joe begins his personal story with stating his sobriety date, March 10th, 1962. He says that even though the AA program is widespread, most alcoholics will die never knowing that the cause of their problems is alcohol. Joe says that just a few days after his wedding, he was committed to the Little Rock Insane Asylum for extreme drunkenness. While in this institution, a fellow patient came up to him with a Big Book and a carton of Camel cigarettes. At that point he began showing interest in AA. He began going to meetings but ran into some problems. This was the summer of 1962, the summer of the demonstrations and the sit-ins and being a black man in the AA program in Little Rock was not an easy thing to do. Joe sums up by saying that the happiest we are ever going to be is when we find out what our purpose in life is and we begin doing that.
