FATHER MARTIN - AA TALK 1-30-77

This is one of Father Martin’s earlier Alcoholics Anonymous talks. Father Martin says he feels that a good AA talk should consist not only of how much and how often someone drank, but should also include a healthy portion of “How well” someone has gotten, the inspiring part. He feels that one should always be careful what they say at an AA meeting because that person could be, “The only Big Book the newcomer ever reads.” When Father Martin’s drinking was at its worse, his bishop sent him to Guest House in Michigan, a recovery center for alcoholic priests. At Guest House he soon met his future mentor, Austin Ripley and was immediately impressed with him. In this talk, Father Martin also discusses Pride versus Humility. He talks about his gratitude. Father Martin ends this particular AA talk by saying, “I do not wish you joy without a sorrow, nor endless day without the healing dark, nor brilliant sun without the restful shadow. “

FATHER MARTIN - AA TALK DATE & LOCATION UNKNOWN

This is a very good Alcoholics Anonymous Talk by Father Joseph Martin. However the date and location are not known. There is no specific subject in this talk, so it’s not part of the Chalk Talk series. However, he does spend some time talking about “Heroes.” In this talk, Father Martin stresses the importance of having heroes in our lives. He states that the traditions tell us to place principles above personalities but never “instead of” because that’s where principles exist, in human souls. Father Martin says that he can’t define charisma, but he knows when he’s near it. Within 5 minutes of meeting his future mentor, Austin Ripley, he was his hero. Regardless of where or when he recorded this message, Father Martin gives another great Alcoholics Anonymous Talk.

FATHER MARTIN - AA TALK IN BILOXI, MS 7-8-72

Father Martin delivered this Alcoholics Anonymous talk at the 26th Meeting of the Mississippi State Convention in Biloxi, Mississippi on July 8th, 1972. Right off the bat, Father Martin tells the Oriental Family/Outhouse joke that had been edited out of the original Chalk Talk film. He tells about drinking for ten years; five socially and five alcoholically. Father Martin says “You don’t need brains to get sober, I’ve met many people too intelligent to get sober but never any that were too dumb.” He tells of his very first AA meeting in Pontiac, Michigan where 26 people immediately opened up to him and he knew he had “Come Home.” Father Martin, very effectively weaves the Bill Wilson story in with the words to the song, “Impossible Dream.” He ends the talk with a prayer and gets a lot of appreciative applause from the crowd.

FATHER MARTIN - AA TALK IN BLYTHEVILLE, AR 1-15-80

This Alcoholics Anonymous talk was made by Father Joseph Martin at “The Coon Supper” meeting in Blytheville, Arkansas on January 15th, 1980. Father Martin seems to have certain serenity in his voice on this recording. He says that when he drank, he didn’t handle alcohol, it handled him. He also says that when we’re drinking, “Our disease teaches us to be scared to death and the only thing that can alleviate that fear is more of the chemical that caused it.” Father Martin talks extensively about the importance of having a sponsor. He tells the crowd that amends aren’t’ made so that you can feel better, you make them because it’s the right thing to do. Father Martin covers all the steps as well in this recording.

Father Martin recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous talk at the 15th Anniversary of the New Life Treatment Center in Burns, Tennessee on October 10, 1998.   FATHER MARTIN - AA TALK IN DAYTONA BEACH, FL 5-16-96

Father Martin recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous talk at the 6th Annual Spring Roundup in Daytona Beach, Florida on May 16th, 1996. In this talk, he reminds his listeners that he is not there to entertain but only to tell them what it was like, what happened and what it is like now. He says he takes his talks very seriously. Father Martin tells about his love affair with martinis. He became a daily drinker and he knew something was wrong when he began to live a lie. He states that lying is a prostitution of the soul; that the human mind is built for truth. Father Martin says we spend our whole life seeking truth, especially trying to find the answers to who, what, where and why. He talks about the ultimate degradation, the shame of what he had become, the inner conflict, separation from others and the isolation. Father Martin was 34 years old when he was finally sent to Guest House in Lake Orion, Michigan on June 15, 1958. He tells the story of his meeting his mentor, Austin Ripley. He talks about Doc Green's Guest House lectures on alcoholism that became the impetus for his famous Chalk Talk lectures. Father Martin gives a poignant rendition of the steps. He’s very passionate and powerful about the steps, especially when he talks about "Amends."

FATHER MARTIN - AA TALK IN DURHAM, NC 1-23-71

Father Martin recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous talk at the 4th Tarheel Midwinter Conference in Durham, North Carolina on January 23rd, 1971. This humorous priest tells a lot of jokes up front in this talk. He tells the crowd that the new man is not the most important man in the room – I am. My sobriety must come before everything else in my life. Father Martin mentions that his own father drank a lot and left a God-awful taste in the mouths of everyone in the family. He’s full of the one-liners; Give in or Cave in; We Must Surrender to Win; We Lose a Battle to Win the War. Father Martin says that the 5th Step is the single, most difficult thing he’s had to do in his life. He says that, “Blessings are not always goodies – sometimes Pain is a blessing as well.”

FATHER MARTIN - AA TALK IN FLORISSANT, MO 3-2-74

Father Martin recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous talk in Florissant, Missouri on March 2nd, 1974. Father Martin says that he believes that one of the strongest indicators of alcoholism is when someone begins to lie about it; non-alcoholics don’t have to lie about their drinking. When he was almost at his bottom, he spent 20 minutes praying on his knees in a church for help; he was drinking again only 20 minutes later. He tells the crowd that the toilet seat that has the front of the seat missing was invented by an alcoholic who got tired of getting hit in the back of the neck. Father Martin says, “We do not work the steps of AA because they’re nice – we work them because they’re necessary.” He says that it’s very important to get the advice of your sponsor before beginning to make amends; you could very easily hurt someone when it’s not necessary.

FATHER MARTIN - AA TALK IN HAMPTON, VA 9-13-91

Father Martin delivered this Alcoholics Anonymous Talk on September 13th, 1991 at the Virginia Area Convention in Hampton, Virginia. He talks in front of a very huge crowd – lots of applause when he delivers one of his jokes. The sound quality of this recording is excellent. Father Martin begins this talk with one of his typical jokes: *A man gets up at a meeting and says “My name is Hank and I haven’t found it necessary to take a drink since 1971.” *Another man gets up and shouts, “Hank, you lying SOB – I saw you drunk last night” *Hank shouts back “Well yes….but it really wasn’t necessary” The first 10 minutes or so are more jokes, but then he gets serious. He says this is not a program of intelligence. He has seen Brilliant People Die Drunk and Illiterates Die Sober. He speaks in depth about Gratitude. “If you want to know the beauty of Gratitude, look at the ugliness of its opposite.” He states that “Ingratitude is the Halitosis of the human soul.” “Ingratitude is the only thing that makes God turn his face away from us.” Another rare treat on this CD is when Father Martin actually sings. He sings the song, One Day at a Time. The very last “sound” that Father Martin makes on this recording is a long, loud gut-wrenching scream. The audience goes crazy with applause. When you hear the CD you’ll realize how funny it is.

FATHER MARTIN - AA TALK IN HOUSTON, TX 1-12-79

Houston, Texas is the place that Father Martin recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous talk. The date was January 12th, 1979. Father Martin says that the absolute worst part of his life was when he returned to the east coast from California where treatment for his alcoholism had failed. The next two years of drinking were sheer hell for him. He tells the crowd that if they have any problem with accepting the Higher Power idea, try mirror therapy. After just a short time, you should easily realize that there has to be a power greater than the person you’re looking at. Father Martin believes that our actions and attitudes at AA meetings are very important but it’s what we do between meetings that determines if we’re Walking the Walk. He believes that because of his sobriety, he is one of the wealthiest men on earth.

FATHER MARTIN - AA TALK IN KENT, CT 8-27-00

This is one on Father Martin’s more recent talks. He recorded this on August 27th, 2000. You can tell by the tone of his voice that he is quite older now (and wiser). He begins with his typical humor by saying, “If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have flossed more.” Father Martin says that he normally does not like to do any reading while giving a talk but he says this reading is special. It’s called “The Paradox of the Alcoholic” written by his mentor. Some of the lines from this writing are: The Alcoholic: Does not drink to pleasure, he drinks to pain, yet he drinks. He will mortgage the wealth of the future to pay up the debts of the past, so he can live in the non-existent present. He drinks to get high in the evening, knowing how low he’ll be in the morning. He gets the first drink he wants and is transported to heaven, when he cannot get the last drink he needs, he is transported to hell. When sober he craves to be drunk, when he is drunk he prays to be sober. We alcoholics have our ups and we have our downs. He gets quite emotional while reciting the following: “I do not wish you joy without a sorrow, nor endless day without the healing dark, nor brilliant sun without the restful shadow. I wish you songs but also blessed silence and God’s sweet peace when everyday is done.”

FATHER MARTIN - AA TALK IN LAKE BROWNWOOD, TX 1-15-72

The Lake Brownwood Conference in Lake Brownwood, Texas is where Father Martin made this Alcoholics Anonymous talk. The date of this recording is January 15th, 1972. Father Martin says he had his first martini on Thanksgiving Day of 1948. He eventually came to love the drink. In speaking about the progression of alcoholism, he says that at first we become puzzled when we drink, a little bewildered, a little scared and at the end we live in sheer terror. Father Martin says he rarely lied about his drinking because he was only asked once. When talking about AA’s steps he says we don’t have to grasp the reasonableness of these steps, you just have to do them. “Alcohol promises to make us King but reduces us to Court Jester.” He says that insanity is not the crazy things we do while drinking, insanity is picking up that first drink after a period of sobriety. Father Martin tells how he became addicted to pills after being sober for 12 years. “You’ve bought tomorrow’s sobriety if you are grateful for today’s.

FATHER MARTIN - AA TALK IN LAKE ORION, MI 8-19-81

Father Martin recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous talk at Guest House, the recovery center for alcoholic priests in Lake Orion, Michigan on August 19th, 1981. He recorded this in front of an audience of Guest House Alumni. Father Martin speaks with deep gratitude for his sponsor and Guest House founder, Austin Ripley. Rip was there to greet him as the 88th priest coming in for treatment when Father Martin felt like, "an empty tin can waiting to be filled up" at the tender age of 34. He cannot impress enough the need for a sponsor; someone in recovery that you want so badly to emulate. He relates how Ripley always spoke in a poetic tongue. He would always remind the priests that "Gratitude is the Golden Tray on which I offer to others what God has given me". Father Martin ends his talk with a lot of emotion as he recites an Irish Prayer.

Father Martin begins this AA talk by stating that his sobriety date is June 15th, 1958. He says he fell in love with the Martini early in his drinking life. Father Martin says that the disease of Alcoholism teaches us how to be “scared to death” and we really don’t even know what we’re afraid of. He talks quite a bit about his mentor, Austin Ripley of Guest House, the treatment center where he found his sobriety. Father Martin says that when he founded Ashley House, he utilized many of the principles he had earlier learned at Guest House. He goes on to give another great AA talk and at the end he sums up the talk by saying, “There’s absolutely nothing on the face of God’s earth as beautiful as the love of one drunk for another.”

He shares some deep convictions he learned while at Guest House, mainly from his mentor, Austin Ripley. He talks about the need for a “real” higher power, not a damned coffee cup.   FATHER MARTIN - AA TALK IN NOVA SCOTIA, CANADA 8-20-80

Father Martin recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous talk at the First Canadian National Convention in Nova Scotia, Canada on August 20th, 1988. As is his custom, Father Martin spends the first several minutes of this recording lightening the mood by telling some of his more popular jokes. He says he likes looking into a sea of smiling faces. Father Martin says during his drinking years he never had to lie much about his drinking because he was rarely confronted, however he certainly LIVED a lie. On Sunday, June 15th, 1958 Father Martin arrived feeling very empty at Guest House, a treatment center for alcoholic priests in Lake Orion, Michigan. He vividly remembers arriving at Guest House. It looked like a big European Castle. Father Martin had a big fear of authority which caused him to remain at Guest House a little longer than the average resident. He has come to realize over the years that the greatest strength that he has is the recognition of his greatest weakest; he cannot handle alcohol. Father Martin says he believes that the prayers that God hears best are the prayers of a soul in pain – the alcoholic that is still drinking. At the end of this talk, Father Martin says, “Come and live in my heart, the rent is free.”

FATHER MARTIN - AA TALK IN OKLAHOMA CITY, OK 3-14-85

Father Martin recorded this Talk in Oklahoma City, OK on March 14th, 1985. Here are some of the topics and he covers and discusses on this CD: He poses the question: What is the definition of Fellowship?/ Insanity of Alcoholism/ What was probably going through Bill Wilson’s mind when he wrote Step Two?/ Shame as it relates to Relapse/ The connection between Relapse, Resentment & Self Pity/ AA member’s tendency to sometimes rate the speaker instead of absorbing the message/ If you don’t want to have a slip, then stay away from slippery places/ Relationships – be cautious. When romance begins, therapy ends/ If I go to meetings, say my prayers and don’t take a drink, I’ll stay sober/ That’s worked for me for 25 years – I believe I’ll try it again today/ Popes have confessors and Presidents have cabinets. Who do I think I am trying to live my life without guidance?/ If I take a drink today, all of my tomorrows are up for grabs/ Father Martin then ends his talk with one of his typically corny (and somewhat confusing) jokes.

He talks about his Johnny Unitas fantasy; he has learned in AA to accept who he is and that no matter how much practicing he does, he will never throw a football like Johnny Unitas. “Prayer is very much like AA meetings; it’s not volume, it’s consistency that matters.”

FATHER MARTIN - AA TALK IN REHOBOTH BEACH, DE 5-14-93

Father Martin, a well known Alcoholics Anonymous speaker recorded this talk in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware on May 14th, 1993. He begins his talk by saying “This is just like coming home….Thank you.” Father Martin tells us that a mature person knows how weak he is. A moron knows how strong he is. “If I know my weakness and live accordingly, I can live a long life. I can’t handle alcohol – that’s my weakness, and everything in my life must revolve around that fact.” “AA is not just a theory. It works. That’s why the Big Book was written in the past tense. If you do THAT, you will get THIS. AA teaches us we’re sick instead of evil. When we put the 12 steps into action, the irrational fears begin to disappear.” “I wish you could be me right now. I wish you could see what I’m looking at. It’s beautiful to have an occasion like this and fall in love with so many people.” This is one of the most heartfelt speeches Father Martin has ever given.

Father Martin recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous talk in Sacramento, California on September, 25th 1973. Father Martin says he has a PhD in taking other people’s inventory. When his drinking was in full force, Father Martin says he would leave the classroom that he was teaching and go up to him room, have a couple of belts and then return to his class. He tells of his very first hospitalization in San Francisco; within three weeks he was in such bad shape again that he was shipped back to Baltimore.
