A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN (1945)
This 1945 film is a delightful combination of concepts. It's one of the quintessential 1940s "good old" movies that is full of sentiment and endearment, yet it is a brilliant, thought-provoking study in the lives of a poor turn-of-the-century Brooklyn family. In Brooklyn circa 1900, the Nolan family manages to enjoy life on pennies despite great poverty and Papa's alcoholism. We come to know these people well through big and little troubles: Aunt Sissy's scandalous succession of "husbands"; the removal of the one tree visible from their tenement; and young Francie's desire to transfer to a better school, if the irresponsible alcoholic Papa can get his act together.

ADDICTED - A COMEDY OF SUBSTANCE
This DVD is the stand-up comedy of Mark Lundholm. Lacing his dialogue with great one-liners Lundholm is an observant, clever write, and a terrific performer. He’s aggressive, funny and charming. He uses humor to tell his story but he never ignores the pain and anger underneath. “Addicted” is an unexpected little hit because it speaks directly to people struggling with addictions ranging from drugs to sex to food to work to the Internet, as well as general theater audiences who were entertained by its pointed comedy and provocative observations. This DVD is rated R for some strong language.

ADDICTION IN THE FAMILY - THE DOMINO EFFECT
When a family member is addicted to alcohol, not only is the family deserving of recovery but their recovery has a direct impact on the ongoing recovery of the addicted person. On this DVD, Doctor Claudia Black presents three particular areas that greatly impact the family: POWERLESSNESS, recognizing that they are powerless over the disease; UNMANAGEABILTY, that their lives had become unmanageable as a result of the addiction and their codependency TOUGH LOVE, to recognize their enabling and to commit to non-enabling behaviors. Claudia uses pictures drawn by young family members to illustrate how the addiction has impacted the family and interactive graphics that underline specific points of her presentation. ADDICTION IN THE FAMILY has been produced to allow you to show this DVD in either the: Interactive format – This is Claudia’s preference, where the DVD can be stopped at two particular cues (Interactive Opportunity) and a short discussion takes place that pertains to issues that she just covered. Straightforward Method – where this DVD is shown in its’ entirety and a discussion follows. If you deal with addictions and you believe that the family must be involved in the recovery process – then this DVD is made for your use.

ALCOHOLISM AND MENTAL ILLNESS
On this DVD we are informed that very often it’s the mental disorder that comes first. Then, as a coping mechanism, the afflicted person becomes a heavy drinker and eventually an alcoholic. We find out that at least half of the people that are diagnosed as being bipolar, also abuse alcohol. This film deals with the person who has received a dual diagnosis, a mental disorder and a problem with alcohol. Most doctors then recommend that this patient attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. When the person then becomes sober but does not get past his other mental issues, it is only then that it is realized that the mental issues as well must be dealt with.

ALCOHOLISM IN AMERICA
America's complicated relationship with alcohol reaches all the way back to the nation's puritanical origins. In this sweeping survey, Mike Wallace and the veteran reporters of CBS examine the many chapters of this ongoing saga. ALCOHOLISM IN AMERICA starts with Prohibition, one of the most spectacular legislative and social failures in history. Scholars detail the forces that worked together to ensure that it wouldn't work, and rare footage brings the era of speakeasies and rum-running back to life. You'll see how the focus switched from punishment to treatment after Prohibition's repeal, as embodied by the rise of Alcoholics Anonymous founded in 1935, it has become on of the most successful treatment programs ever. And finally, law enforcement officers, sociologists and others offer various perspectives on binge drinking in colleges and high schools and the impact of drunk driving. Thoughtful, balanced and thought-provoking, this DVD details America's responses to alcohol abuse through the decades.

ALCOHOLISM IN THE 1940S - PROBLEM DRINKERS
This relatively short DVD is unique in the fact that it contains a short talk by Alcoholics Anonymous pioneer, Marty Mann. She is introduced as the Director of the National Committee for Education on Alcoholism. Marty speaks to a small group of men for only about 35 seconds but you can see why she was such a sought after speaker. This DVD also gives great insight into the way that alcoholism was viewed in the 1940s. It touches on the topics of Prohibition, The Women’s Christian Temperance Movement, and The Yale School of Alcohol Studies. Included is a short clip of Bill Wilson’s friend, Dr E.M. Jellinek conducting alcohol experiments on rats. At one point the narrator states that, “From its small New York City Office, one of the most dramatic effects on treating alcoholism is being done by Alcoholics Anonymous.” It shows a man struggling with a drinking problem, getting exposed to AA, becoming sober, making amends, and finally passing the message on to another suffering alcoholic by giving him the Big Book. This film provides a brief but interesting glimpse into what alcoholism and AA was like 65 years ago.

AN EVENING WITH BILL W
This recording is sometimes referred to as: THE DAY DOCTOR BOB DIED. On this DVD, Bill Wilson (one of the two co-founders of Alcoholics Anonymous), is recreated by actor, Bill McNiff to share the pain and wisdom that lead to the beginning of the largest self-help group in the world. The occasion is the day that Dr Bob died in 1950. Based on re-enactments of historically accurate conversations and speeches, this intimate sharing of Bill W. recalls significant moments in his life and his downward spiral into alcoholism. Struggling to get and stay sober, Bill is introduced to Dr. Bob and the two discover the shared benefits of one alcoholic talking to another. "An Evening with Bill W" introduces the audience not only to a man who changed medical history by offering a program of recovery from a highly complex and often misunderstood disease, but to a man who continued to wrestle with his own problems of pride and discouragement. Please understand that the people who appear on this DVD are actors – this is a recreation, and it’s very good.

AN ILLUSTRATED STORY ABOUT DRINKING
This DVD follows the life of "Tony," from birth to recovery from drinking. Assisted by very colorful illustrations, the narrator begins Tony's story right at the beginning of his life. His emotional needs were met by his very loving mother. As he progresses through his teenage years, he gives in to peer pressure and takes his first drink. As Tony ages and continues drinking, the dark side of his personality becomes more dominant. The DVD goes on to show Tony's ongoing problems caused by the drink. It shows the intervention process, Tony's stay at a rehab center and his eventual joining up with Alcoholics Anonymous. One would think that because of the illustrations used in this video, it would be aimed at the younger generation; however the subject matter is covered in a very intelligent way. The topic of the progression of alcoholism is thoroughly covered.

ANGER
Anger is a feeling nearly all people struggle with. People live in fear of expressing it or may find it the only safe feeling available to them. Claudia Black begins this DVD with an explanation of the various types and forms of anger. She moves through the many faces of anger including: Passive Aggressive behavior, Sarcasm, Verbal Abuse, Blaming, Blind Rage, Isolation, Depression, and the use of Medicators. In time, anger becomes self-hate, a buffer against feelings, and a defense against shame. The client momentarily feels righteously indignant, morally superior, and a sense of power. For some it’s a way to get high with anger excitement. Others walk through life letting anger solve their problems. They do not know where the anger begins, it’s just there. As with other addictions, anger can be a build-up of tolerance, loss of control, negative consequences and an inability to stop. Like the alcoholic, the anger junkie displays a Jekyll and Hyde personality. Calm and controlled one minute and out of control one second later. Anger has immediate and long term consequences – loss of jobs, financial repercussions, broken relationships, personality depravation and for some, jail & prison. Dr Black guides the viewer through a recovery process. She concludes with The Seven Steps. These simple steps are designed to act as a self-help tool that the client can use each day in their recovery.

We thought this DVD was very interesting and probably a little ahead of it's time. It's from the old TV show called, "Leave it to Beaver." Beaver makes a new friend named Andy Hadlock. Knowing Andy from years ago, Beaver's parents keep referring to Andy's, "trouble." However, the advice they give Beaver about drinking is excellent. But Ward and June Cleaver eventually realize that keeping old friend Andy Hadlock's "trouble" a secret from Wally and Beaver was not necessarily the best way to handle the problem. BILL DISCUSSES THE 12 TRADITIONS
On this DVD, Bill Wilson himself talks about the formation of the Twelve Traditions of Alcoholics Anonymous. This was originally filmed in 1969 and shows Bill and about 8 men and women seated around a large oval table. Bill describes how he and some other early members saw the need for basic guidelines to ensure that AA as a whole would survive and prosper. Some things Bill talks about are: Struggles among the early AA members, Cleveland Plain Dealer Articles, Meeting with Nelson Rockefeller who filled in for his ailing father, The Saturday Evening Post Article publicity, The AA Rotating Committee, Harry Fosdick, and Attraction versus Promotion.
Bill also tells of the time Dr. Bob who was gravely ill, confided in him that he was offered a large mausoleum for his internment to commemorate his important role in the formation of Alcoholics Anonymous. Bill also reveals that he himself was approached by Time Magazine wanting to do a cover story and a biographical sketch. This recording was made in New York City. There is no date on this recording but based on Bill’s appearance and references to a few different events, it most likely was filmed about a year prior to Bill’s death.

BILL W AND DR BOB
On this DVD, you’ll experience the 2007 off-Broadway hit “Bill W and Dr Bob.” Absorbing, moving, and often amusing, this richly evocative play tells the story of the two men who pioneered Alcoholics Anonymous, Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith, as well as the story of their wives, Lois Wilson and Anne Smith. It’s the great American story of two men who, alone, were going to die, but who together not only found a way to live, but also created a program for healing that has spread throughout the world. It’s the miraculous story, beautifully told, of the men who named the disease and created the cure. This is a remarkable performance that is sure to contribute to the de-stigmatization of the disease. This play is not only entertaining, it’s a powerful portrayal of the start of one of the most remarkable events of all time - the birth of AA.

BILL'S OWN STORY
Bill Wilson himself tells his story and how Alcoholics Anonymous was formed. This was originally a 16mm movie that was filmed in 1965 and has now been reformatted onto DVD. It’s in color and 60 minutes in length. The quality is very good considering the age of the original recording. This was filmed at "Stepping Stones," Bill and Lois' home in Bedford Hills, New York. Bill and Lois begin their talk on their patio and conclude in their kitchen. Bill and Lois discuss: Bill's kitchen table meeting with Ebby T, The Spiritual Awakening, Doctor Silkworth, That fateful day in the Mayflower Hotel, Reverend Tunks, Henrietta Seiberling, Doctor Bob, and much more on this unique DVD. Many AA members know the Bill Wilson Story from reading the Big Book. BOTTOM OF THE BOTTLE (1956)
On this DVD, Patrick Martin (Joseph Cotten), known as PM, is a wealthy attorney and rancher big-man-in-town in the border town of Nogales, Arizona. He returns home to find his brother Donald (Van Johnson) hiding in his garage. Donald, an alcoholic had been sent to the penitentiary five years previously for killing a man in a barroom brawl. It was in self-defense but PM hadn't defended his brother and he was convicted. Donald has escaped and wants his brother to help him across the Santa Cruz River into the Mexico-side Nogales, where his wife (Shirley Patterson as Shawn Smith) and children (Kim Charney and Sandy Deschler) are in dire straits. The straits get even more dire when PM tells him the river is flooded and it will be days before anyone can cross. And PM is all a'twitter because his wife Nora (Ruth Roman), whom he married after Donald had gone to prison, doesn't know about his jail-bird brother. He introduces Donald to Nora and the rest of his Cadillac Cowboy and ranch society friends as an old friend, and is kept busy trying to make sure old Donald doesn't find anything harder that ginger ale to drink. Donald gets a telephone call telling him that his family has gone from dire straits to destitution and when PM won't get some money to them through his contacts in the Mexico side of Nogales, Donald knocks him down and grabs a couple of bottles of whiskey and dashes out of the house into the rain.

CHAMPION - THE DANNY TREJO STORY
Long time AA member, Danny Trejo says that “If it weren’t for God and Alcoholics Anonymous, I’d be dead.” On this DVD, Danny tells the story about his life, his addiction to heroin and alcohol and his eventual “awakening” while in Soledad prison. Danny Trejo, a hardcore tattooed character actor featured in such films as Desperado, Con Air and From Dusk Till Dawn has a checkered past. He spent many years in the California prison system but by age 24 he had had enough. He was tired of repeating the same pattern over and over. He realized that unless he got out of himself and began helping others, he’d slip back into the same life style. Soon after leaving prison for the last time, he went to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. He credits AA with turning his life around. Good friends and fellow actors Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, and Steve Buscemi share their experiences while working with Danny.

CHILDREN OF DENIAL
Children of Denial is a DVD about youngsters, adolescents, and adults as children of alcoholics. Children of alcoholics are affected by their parent’s alcoholism and /or chemical dependency. Dr. Claudia Black, in a warm and sensitive style, examines what happens to these children and offers some answers for the problems. “It Will Never Happen to Me” is a line spoken by all who have been raised in a family where one or both parents have a problem with alcohol. Most children from these homes get through their adolescence looking good and they appear to survive all the problems and hardships of life in an alcoholic family. They abide by the laws – Don’t Talk, Don’t Trust, Don’t Feel!! Survival techniques practiced as children and adolescence cause problems in adulthood. Depression, inability to maintain relationships, marrying alcoholics, and becoming alcoholic are a few of the results. This DVD shares some of the experiences of children of alcoholics, explains the process of what happens and what can be done to prevent and handle these problems.

CHUCK CHAMBERLAIN - THE SPIRITUAL WAY OF LIFE
This DVD is a recently-discovered film of AA oldtimer, Chuck Chamberlain. It was made in the early 1970s at a college university and not at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. However, this DVD sums up Chuck’s thoughts on “Spirituality.” The quality of this DVD reflects the technology available at the time the original recording was made. It’s probably a 6 out of 10. We believe that the lasting importance of Chuck’s message is well worth the less-than-perfect video quality.
