SPONSORSHIP WORKSHOP - GARY MILLER 8-21-99
Gary Miller of Long Beach, Mississippi gave this Alcoholics Anonymous Sponsorship Workshop in Jackson, Mississippi on August 21st, 1999. Gary’s sobriety date is October 6th, 1986. He talks extensively about how he found his own sponsor and the relationship they’ve had over many years. At one point Gary goes back into AA History and talks about Ebby Thatcher, the sponsor of Bill Wilson and also Searcy Whaley, the sponsor of Ebby Thatcher. Gary’s got some pretty tough rules that he expects his sponsees to conform to. He tells his new people that if they can’t do these basic things, then they’ve got to find a different sponsor.

SPONSORSHIP WORKSHOP - THE RAYMER TWINS IN ICELAND
This Alcoholics Anonymous Sponsorship Workshop was recorded in Iceland by popular AA speakers Chris and Meyers Raymer. The brothers both believe that the AA newcomer should jump into the steps immediately upon entering the program. They say the steps were meant to be worked rapidly. They both do a lot of sponsoring for many reasons, but the bottom line is they do it because it’s “just plain fun.” Nothing else compares to the feeling of seeing a person move from their original broken-down condition to becoming a useful member of society. They speak of the evils and the unfairness of thirteenth stepping. This is a good, high energy recording.

THE DOCTOR'S OPINION - KARL M
This Alcoholics Anonymous Workshop on The Doctor’s Opinion was recorded in Iceland by Karl M from Covina, California. Karl begins this talk by giving some background on Dr Silkworth, the man who treated Bill Wilson for alcoholism in Townes Hospital in New York City. He tells us that Dr Silkworth only accepted the job at Townes Hospital because he was having trouble finding work during the great depression. He was paid very little. Karl talks about how Dr Jung and Dr Silkworth’s knowledge complimented each other. Dr Silkworth knew about the problem but not the solution and Dr Jung knew of the solution but not the cause. Karl talks about the alcoholic feeling restless, irritable and discontent while sober. This is the “Obsession of the Mind.” He asks members in attendance to follow along in their Big Books and then takes some questions from the crowd. Some of them are somewhat humorous. A great talk about a very specific topic.

THE DOCTOR'S OPINION - WAYNE BUTLER
If you love sobriety and like to laugh, you have to listen to this talk. Wayne, from Santa Monica, California is living proof that we are not a glum lot. He recorded this talk in Covington, LA in June of 2004. He talks about some of the history and his research on The Doctor’s Opinion from the Big Book of AA. He mixes parts of his own experience with that of Dr Silkworth’s for one of the most informative and most humorous AA talks you’ve ever heard. Wayne has a unique way of using examples from his story to help the listener understand what The Doctor’s Opinion is all about. He shows you that we can be serious about being sober and still laugh at ourselves. Also, after listening to this you will never look at Milk Bones Dog Biscuits the same way again!!!

THE EARLY HISTORY OF AA (8 CDs)
This seminar on the early history of Alcoholics Anonymous was recorded by AA history buffs Mel Barger and George Trotter at Valparaiso, Indiana on March 10, 1995. This set contains a wealth of information about the early history of AA. The first few CDs are of Mel and George talking to the audience. The later CDs consist of questions and answers. People in the audience ask questions which are answered along with any topics which the questions give rise to. This recording is unscripted and informal. During the talks, Mel and George remark that this will never be a "canned" presentation done over and over again. There is no script. This is the complete seminar organized down to eight CDs from the original twelve. Each CD has 16 tracks and is very full.

THE FAMILY AFTERWARD - TOM BRADY 1986
Well-known and well-spoken Alcoholics Anonymous speaker, Tom Brady, Jr made this recording in Cleveland, Ohio in 1986. He has been sober since July 20th, 1965. Tom says that just stopping the drinking is never enough to make up for damages done while the alcoholic was still drinking. He strongly urges the family to try to understand what the alcoholic is facing after putting down the bottle. The simple truth is that many families break up during the recovery process; people just aren’t used to the new dynamic in the home. Tom breaks down what the family faces during the 0 thru 2 year period of sobriety. He continues explaining what is likely to happen during the 2 thru 5 year period as well as the 5 thru 7 year period of sobriety.

THE LORD'S PRAYER - CHARLES LINDENWOOD 1967
AA oldtimer, Charles Lindenwood recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous talk in Blackstone, Virginia way back in October of 1967. After “experimenting” with AA a few times Charles Lindenwood, also known as The Arkansas Traveler, re-entered the rooms of AA with a real spirit on May 15th, 1945. Since that time, Charles has been a very active member of AA. In this talk, Charles explains the meaning of The Lord’s Prayer and how it applies to AA. He breaks it down into eight different segments and with his homespun Arkansas humor goes through this prayer that has been a mainstay in the rooms of AA for decades. This is a very interesting talk by a great AA old-timer.

THE SPIRITUAL LIFE IS NOT A THEORY - SANDY BEACH (2 CDs)
Sandy recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous Talk at Jekyll Island, Georgia on November 2nd, 2001. Sandy’s sobriety date is December 7th, 1964. His home group is the Saturday Night Fever Group in Tampa, Florida. Sandy talks a little about the early development of AA. He also talks about how he was able to find a power greater than himself. Sandy talks about having to set aside our previous beliefs, and learn to turn over our lives to a higher power and get our thinking away from ourselves. He talks about the need to open up the channel between yourself and your higher power. With character defects blocking this channel, a spiritual life is very hard to maintain. Once that channel is cleared out, the spiritual life is no longer just a theory. Sandy wraps up his talk by saying, “After listening to this talk, if just one new person gets motivated into taking the action to get closer to his personal God, that would be the greatest reward I can imagine.”

THE TOMBSTONES TALK - GENE DUFFY
This is a very interesting and unusual recording. Alcoholics Anonymous Oldtimer, Gene Duffy recorded this way back on May 1st, 1984. Throughout this recording, Gene refers to pictures he has posted of AA members who once attended this meeting. They are now all dead. Gene fantasizes that these deceased people are in attendance again today. He imagines what these people would say today. Gene knew these people very well so he “speaks for them.” He pulls no punches here; he gives the names of all these people, how their relapse came about and how they died. Gene also challenges the crowd to come back to this meeting one year from today. He tells them that at least one of them will have died from alcoholism.

THE TWELVE STEPS - CLANCY IMISLUND (2 CDs)
Clancy recorded this workshop about the 12 steps in Woodstock, Georgia on February 14th, 1998. Clancy begins this talk by stating that he believes in the same thing as Doctor Bob, that this AA program, including the 12 steps should be kept “simple.” Don’t make the steps complicated. He says that you don’t have to understand how any of these things are going to happen; all you have to do is come to believe that they will. Clancy weaves some of his own story into this 12 step study. He takes a couple of breaks in his talk to answer questions from the people in attendance. He is a firm believer in the 8th and 9th steps. Clancy says that these are the most critical steps of the program. He talks about the word change in the 12th step, from “experience” to “awakening” and the difference between the two. One of the more interesting questions that Clancy answers is, “How do you make amends to someone who has passed away?” Great talk.
