ALCOHOLISM - WHAT IS IT? - FATHER VAL LAFRANCE

Right at the beginning of this recording Father LaFrance says, Alcoholism is a disease…It is not a Disgrace.” From there he explains what alcoholism is and what it does to the afflicted individual. He explains the loss of a conscience, the isolation, and the personality change. Father LaFrance also gives a detailed explanation of what goes on chemically in the alcoholic’s brain. He lists, in order, the different ethnicities that are most likely to be victims of alcoholism. Those are: the American Indian, the Irish, The Polish, the Russians, the Scandinavians, the French and the list goes on from there. He believes that a person’s genetics has more to do with the likelihood of becoming alcoholic than a person’s environment. Father LaFrance talks about the alcoholic’s need for hitting bottom and having a spiritual awakening before recovery is possible.

He talks about how Dr Harry Tiebout struggled to have alcoholism recognized as a disease. He basically speaks about alcoholism, the alcoholic and AA in general. John is a very powerful speaker. John says he drank alcoholically for 17 years. Alcohol had caused him so much turmoil that he entered the seminary to try to relive some of the pain he was in. He gives a lot of important information about how alcoholism works. The question that John keeps asking throughout this recording is, “Why do we keep spending all this money on alcohol research when we have the answer right in front of us? It’s Alcoholics Anonymous.” John also talks in-depth about the Oxford Group principle of “surrender.” This really is a very passionate talk by this dynamic speaker.

He stresses the fact that none of us can get physically drunk without first getting mentally drunk. Earnie really drives home the idea of, “Stinking Thinking.” He touches on the importance of avoiding our old drinking friends and places, otherwise a slip is inevitable.

DEATH OF A SALESMAN - EDWARD JUERGENS

This is a unique recording in that it is Edward Juergens’ Alcoholics Anonymous story but he tells it from the perspective of one who has had trouble throughout his life with being accepted. He had always been afraid that people would see though him, so he was “selling” himself as someone different than he really was. Edward says that recovery is all about letting your real self out and not being afraid to show who you really are. He gets passionate at times during this talk especially when he states, “Stop selling yourself and start buying God.”

  DETACHMENT - TOM BRADY

The topic of this recording by Tom Brady is Detachment. Tom believes that detachment is being able to flow through life like water, to let things roll off of you and keep on going smoothly. He says that it's very important to detach ourselves from the people we believe have wronged us in the past. Tom also goes over the Twelve Steps and tells how detachment applies to them. Please note: There is a slight high-pitched tone that runs through most of this recording. Although it's noticeable, it does not detract from Tom's speech.

DR BOB - PRINCE OF THE TWELFTH STEPPERS (2 CDs)

This is a very unique recording by Alcoholics Anonymous old-timer, Dick Burns. The name, “Prince of the Twelfth Steppers,” was given to Dr Bob by co-founder, Bill Wilson. Dick has done an extreme amount of research into Dr Bob Smith’s life. Here he records this information that most AA members have never heard before. This 2 CD recording of Dick Burns is divided into three sections. In section one, he delves into Dr Bob’s youth, his education, his religious training particularly in Christian Endeavor, and his church life right up to the date of his death. In section two, Dick talks about some of the things that Dr Bob taught and how a great deal of the book Alcoholics Anonymous came from the Good Book and his kitchen table sessions with Bill Wilson in AA’s earliest days. Section three covers the material that Dr Bob read and emphasized. He mentions an extreme amount of books and authors as well as pamphlets. A lot of historical information here that can’t be found anywhere else.

EMOTIONAL SOBRIETY - POLLY PISTOLE (2 CDs)

At the beginning of this recording Polly announces her sobriety date as being April 11th, 1977. Her inspiration for this talk is a letter that Bill Wilson wrote for the Grapevine that he entitled, “Emotional Sobriety.” During this talk she often refers to the Bill Wilson book, “Language of the Heart.” She says that many alcoholics are addicted to “Approval.” Polly talks about quite a few character defects. Some of the defects she covers are intolerance, resentment, anger, jealousy, fear, sarcasm, blame, etc. She points out that Emotional Sobriety is mentioned 17 times in the first 164 pages of the Big Book. In reference to the idea of practicing good habits and making them part of you, she finishes her talk with the statement, “Repetition will strengthen and confirm and Faith will then come naturally.”

EMOTIONAL SOBRIETY - POLLY PISTOLE - LAKE MILTON, OH (5 CDs)

Popular AA speaker, Polly Pistole from Cypress, California does a great job with this workshop on Emotional Sobriety. She recorded this at Lake Milton, Ohio in August of 2003. This presentation takes place over a weekend and encompasses Polly's story worked into and around the 12 steps of AA. Polly was 26 yrs sober at the time of this talk. She immediately states at the beginning of day 1 of this workshop how she still suffers from overwhelming emotional traumas and cites two incidents. Her bottom is the ultimate; DOA at a hospital, overdosed on prescription pills and alcohol. Her 3rd attempt at AA in her mid 30s was April 11, 1977 and it stuck. She was full of rage, and talks about the guilt of abusing her two sons, her childhood and how she lacked discipline. She was an only child from two parents who also were abused. One of her brilliant observations that she shares is that if you come into this program with low self esteem, which we all do, then what you must do is . . . "do something that gives you esteem, i.e. ACTION." She uses the Big Book Chapter "Into Action" and incorporates her wisdom and experience of explaining how to do the 12 Steps. They are broken down into groups over the 3 days. This workshop is very real, down to earth and heartfelt. Great for Women, but men can get another dimension of thought as well. Review written by Iris W of Black Mountain, North Carolina.

On this recording, well-known speaker John Bradshaw talks about the different types of SHAME. He says that a little bit of shame is healthy but when you have so much that your identity becomes shame-based, you’ve got problems. John says that shame is the core belief of every addict and alcoholic. Whatever the addiction is, it’s going to be rooted in toxic shame. On the other hand, healthy shame is an enormously important emotion. It makes you realize that you need help and that you are not God. Healthy shame is also the source of creativity and learning.

MORE ABOUT ALCOHOLISM - JOHN BRADSHAW 11-5-82

This talk about alcoholism was recorded by well-known speaker, John Bradshaw. He recorded this at the 22nd Crossroads Dinner in Phoenix, Arizona on November 5th, 1982. John expands on his alcoholism talk he gave at this same event one year earlier called, “All about Alcoholism.” He says that way back in 1968 at age 30, he felt that he had accomplished it all – highly educated, high paying job, etc., but inside he wanted to kill himself. Alcoholism was eating him alive. Then he heard a very simple but profound statement from someone. They told him that, “Alcoholism caused my drinking.” That really hit home with John. John tells employers that if they notice someone at work with signs of alcoholism, it’s very important to get involved because that person is most likely in the later stages of the disease; most alcoholics protect their money source but when they can no longer hide it at work, they are likely well into the disease. John finishes speaking by reciting a very poignant poem about your fellow man called, “The Cold Within.”

PROBLEMS OF OUR OWN MAKING - SANDY BEACH 2006

Sandy Beach, from Tampa, Florida recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous Workshop at the 2006 Crested Butte Mountain Conference in Crested Butte, Colorado. This talk is very much about being able to accept the “entire” package of spiritual growth. Sandy compares acceptance of the 12 Step program to being reborn much like a young chick picking his way out of the shell. He says that in a way, giving up the booze was the easy part because there was no doubt that it was killing us physically. However, it’s difficult to surrender our other character defects because there is no absolutely clear-cut reason to do so.

REGAINING INTEGRITY IN SOBRIETY - LYNN CARROL

This is a unique Alcoholics Anonymous talk. Lynn Carrol, the first director of Hazelden, doesn’t talk so much about his own story but about regaining personal integrity after you have attained sobriety. Continued sobriety is obviously a must for regaining your integrity and Lynn talks about things to avoid. Things like self pity and losing your sense of gratitude. Lynn talks about projection – blaming your problems on someone else. Lynn ends his talk with this poem, “It’s not what we get, it’s what we share, for the gift without the giver is bare. He who gives of himself feeds three, himself, his hungry neighbor and me.” A really interesting talk.

RELAPSE PREVENTION - CHRIS RAYMER 1999

Well-known Alcoholics Anonymous circuit speaker, Chris Raymer was 11 years sober when he recorded this Relapse Prevention Workshop in 1999. Chris says that he was hanging around AA for eight years and was still considering suicide. He believes with all his heart, that “relapsing is not unavoidable,” like a lot of people may tell you. Once you’ve gone through a spiritual awakening, your Higher Power will kick in and the compulsion to drink will be gone forever. “Relapses are caused by allowing your spiritual life to slip.”

SPIRITUALITY AND AA - DR ERNIE KURTZ

On this recording, Alcoholics Anonymous Historian and Author of “NOT GOD,” speaks on Spirituality and AA. Dr Kurtz begins his talk by explaining the title to his book. Apparently many people take “NOT GOD” the wrong way. They expect atheism but that is not what the title refers to. In AA we are supposed to stop playing God. The title is meant to convey that we of AA are not God and have stopped playing God. The reason he adds is simple "It didn't work". In very simple but expressive language he talks at length about spirituality in AA. He uses quotes extensively including from the Big Book. This is however a very original talk. Ernie doesn't parrot any speakers. This is his own original material arranged by him from his years of study, observation and teaching.

SPONSORSHIP WORKSHOP - DICK MARTIN (3 CDS)

This 3 CD set is divided as follows:

CD 1 – How to Look for a Sponsor
CD 2 – How to be Sponsored
CD 3 – How I Sponsor

Dick Martin of Bellevue, Nebraska is an excellent speaker that sounds like your father or grandfather giving you the advice you really should have taken when you were a youngster. His voice is especially comforting; he reminds you of Wilford Brimley telling you how good oatmeal is for you. The recording is filled with great practical tips on sponsorship. It basically has all the stuff that you need to know that is NOT in the big book. There are a couple of short interludes of guests speaking on the tape and that helps change the tempo of it somewhat. This CD set is good for anyone who wants to be a sponsor, wants to know what to expect from a good sponsor, and even how to be a good sponsee.
