  GARTH D - AUSTIN, TX 6-6-91

Garth D from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous talk in Austin, Texas on June 6th, 1991. Garth introduces himself as, “Half Jackass and Half Child of God.” He comes from a long line of drinkers and abstainers. Before Garth was 20 years of age he was already living on Skid Row. He also went to his first AA meeting at age 20. His mind was so open at that time that the whole program blew right through. He and a friend spent a lot of time in mental institutions; they would often escape, buy whiskey and bring it back to drink. Garth spends some time talking about his experiences with the 5th step. After a fairly lighthearted talk, Garth gets real serious toward the end of this recording. He says that after many, many years of sobriety, his business failed and he felt so bad that he was considering suicide; he thought God had given up on him.

GAVIN GRIFFITH - EL PASO, TX 2-19-89

Gavin Griffith recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous talk at the 27th AA Jamboree in El Paso, Texas on February 19th, 1989. Gavin says that when he first started drinking, alcohol was working for him; he could be anybody he wanted to be. When he wasn't looking, he began working for alcohol. Gavin tells a funny story about an elephant pulling his car out of a ditch. He believes that alcoholics have major conflicts between their values and their behavior, and increased drinking keeps widening that gap. Gavin tells about some good advice he got from AA pioneer, Clarence Snyder; mostly about AA unity. At the very end, Gavin reads a poem that he wrote.

  GREG M - BRENTWOOD, CA 8-30-00

Greg, from New York recorded this Alcoholics Anonymous talk at the Pacific Group in Brentwood, California on August 30th, 2000. There’s a genuine sense of serenity in Greg’s voice as he speaks. He got sober in Maui, Hawaii in 1978. He was born and raised in Inglewood, California. Greg got into all sorts of trouble way before he even had his first drink. He says that he was a People Pleaser in the extreme; “I would do anything to have you love me.” Greg moved to Hawaii because he was wanted by the authorities in California. He had a very bad drunk driving accident and swore off alcohol but wasn’t even able to make it 24 hours. The following 7 years were the worst of Greg’s life; he had strong thoughts of suicide. Greg goes on to tell how he got in touch with AA and shares about his love for the book, Alcoholics Anonymous Comes of Age.

HAL CORNELIUS - POCATELLO, ID 5-4-90

Alcoholics Anonymous veteran, Hal Cornelius gave this AA talk at The 1990 Idaho Spring Assembly in Pocatello, Idaho on May 4th, 1990. Hal reflects back on the first time he got drunk; he and some friends bought some cheap Muscatel. He was a troubled drunk by age 17 and by age 19 he was in his first psycho ward. At one point, Hal’s drinking was so bad, he moved into a chicken coop, was drinking wine like crazy and his teeth began to fall out. Hal is very grateful for the Jack Alexander article that appeared in the Saturday Even Post. It was reading that article that caused him to contact AA. He took a couple of belts of tequila and went to his first meeting that same night. Hal shares a few ways that he keeps himself humble today. At the very end of this talk, he says as a gauge for his behavior, he asks himself if his mother would be proud. Then he says, “As I stand here today in front of you, by God, I think mom would be proud of me.”

HANK JOHNSON - GRAND FORKS, ND 4-2-93

Hank lived in Charlotte, North Carolina at the time he made this Alcoholics Anonymous recording. The talk was made in Grand Forks, North Dakota on April 2nd, 1993. Hank was sober for 23 years at that time. He drank for just about 30 years. He says he’s got no interesting drunken stories because, “You can’t get into much trouble just sitting on the edge of your bed drinking.” Hank says he was very turned off by AA when he was first exposed to it. However, when he heard circuit speaker, Clancy Imislund give an AA talk, he became highly inspired and motivated. He eventually asked Clancy to become his sponsor. Hank’s wife passed away and he eventually became interested in dating again, But then he realized, “I don’t know anything about relationships; I’ve been married all my life.”

HANK JOHNSON - HILTON HEAD, SC 1-20-89

Hank Johnson is from the west coast. He’s a very funny man and it’s very evident in this Alcoholics Anonymous recording that he made on January 20th, 1989 in Hilton Head, South Carolina. He was sober for 19 years at the time of this talk. Hank says he never really participated in life, he only “observed” it. He was able to get served in bars at the age of 19. Hank tells a humorous version of how his life was on a day by day basis; doing the same things over and over again, having big plans of stopping his drinking and becoming successful but never getting out of his rut. After almost non-stop humor for most of this recording, Hank gets serious when he tells about his wife getting cancer and how his involvement with AA got both of them through the terrible ordeal. This is a great AA talk from a man with an excellent sense of humor.
