The son of Irish immigrants, Pete Hamill is raised by his supportive mother, but feels overlooked by his crippled, alcoholic father. In a captivating narrative, Hamill reflects on his early experiences with alcohol and considers the personal implications of the American culture of drinking.

On this recording you’ll hear about James. A badly tattered James awakens on an airplane to Chicago, with no recollection of his injuries or of how he ended up on the plane. He is met by his parents at the airport, who take him to a rehabilitation clinic. We find out that James is 23 years old, and has been an alcoholic for ten years, and a crack addict for three. He is also wanted by the police in three different states on several charges. A Million Little Pieces is darkly fascinating. It’s an illicit stroll into a hopeless territory which many enter, and from which few return. It is a peek into the mind of the alcoholic and into the horror that is addiction. In it, we watch as James Frey learns to live again, learns to be normal again. We see him develop honest and loving relationships with fellow patients who run the gamut of society - a mobster, a judge, a former boxing champion, a prostitute. We see him scorn the 12 steps, and we sense a level of self-will that he claims will keep him clean.

AS A MAN THINKETH
Written by James Allen and published way back in 1902, this volume was used by early Alcoholics Anonymous members to understand the principle of "cause and effect." This was one of several books AA pioneers read before the Big Book was written. Allen makes the following points: A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts. Man creates all of the circumstances of his life through thought, and his environment is the reflection of these circumstances. The mind must be treated as a garden so we must learn to identify and remove the weeds.
The core AA ideas, "Our troubles are basically of our own making," and that "some of us have tried to hold onto our old ideas and the result was nil until we let go absolutely," are derived directly from this volume.
As a Man Thinketh is a classic in the truest sense. Few books have been so widely read, have stood the test of time so well, have had such an impact on generations of readers, and have carried such a simple, profound message: You are what you think.
Each of the eight chapters is on its own track for easy navigation. 1. Thought and Character 2. Effect of Thought on Circumstances 3. Effects of Thoughts on Health and Body 4. Thought and Purpose 5. The Thought-Factor in Achievement 6. Visions and Ideals 7. Serenity

BREATHING UNDER WATER - SPIRITUALITY AND THE TWELVE STEPS (2 CDs)
On this presentation in front of a live audience, speaker Richard Rohr wraps the Twelve Steps in the cloak of Christianity and talks about the role the Gospel can play in addressing a society that he sees as deteriorating from social addictions, as well as individual ones. Rohr speaks with fervor about the politics and myths of our culture that condemn those who differ from us and that have convinced many Americans that the United States stands above all others. Rohr's passion for turning back to what he sees as the basic teachings of Jesus is strong.

Readers hoping for sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll won't be disappointed by the legendary guitarist's autobiography. As he retraces every step of his career, from the early stints with the Yardbirds and Cream to his solo successes, Clapton also devotes copious detail to his drug and alcohol addictions, particularly how they intersected with his romantic obsession with Pattie Boyd. His relationship with the woman for whom he wrote Layla culminated in a turbulent marriage he describes as drunken forays into the unknown. But he genuinely warms to the subject of his recovery, stressing its spiritual elements and eagerly discussing the fund-raising efforts for his Crossroads Clinic in Antigua. His self-reckoning is filled with modesty, especially in the form of dissatisfaction with his early successes. Both his youthful excesses and his current calm state are narrated with an engaging tone that nudges Clapton's story ahead of other rock 'n' roll memoirs.

GETTING BETTER - INSIDE ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS (3 CDs)
This is a reading of the book, Getting Better – Inside Alcoholics Anonymous by Nan Robertson. It is read by actress, Michael Learned. Robertson traces the history of the organization, which had its roots in the Oxford Movement of the 1930s and was actually formed when alcoholics Bill Wilson and Bob Smith bared their hearts to one another in Akron, Ohio, in 1935. Counter to popular wisdom, it is not necessary to be devoutly religious to join AA and commends society's gaining recognition of alcoholism as a disease. Concluding with her own moving story, Robertson has written an inspiring overview of a noble organization.

HOW TO LIVE ON 24 HOURS A DAY (2 CDs)
This book, by Arnold Bennett is believed to be one of the books that was read by the Alcoholics Anonymous pioneers prior to the writing of the Big Book. Written in 1910, Bennett urges people to seize their extra time, and make the most of it to improve themselves. Extra time could be found at the beginning of the day, by waking up early, and on the ride to work, on the way home from work, in the evening hours, and especially during the weekends. During this time, he prescribes improvement measures such as reading great literature, taking an interest in the arts, reflecting on life, and learning self-discipline. Each of the 12 chapters is on its on track for easy navigation.

JOHN BARLEYCORN - ALCOHOLIC MEMOIRS (MP3 ONLY)
This is the complete audio version of the book by the great author, Jack London. Because of its length, we are offering this recording in MP3 format only. Originally published in 1913, John Barleycorn is the first intelligent literary treatise on alcohol abuse in American literature. London offers acute generalizations on alcoholism together with a close narrative of his own drinking career, which was heroic in scale. London's love of alcohol is professed quite profusely in this work; however that love is tempered by the recognition of the toll that alcohol bears. As he writes, "This strength John Barleycorn gives is not fictitious strength. It is real strength.... But it is manufactured out of the sources of strength, and it must ultimately be paid for, and with interest." A telling memoir, "John Barleycorn" provides a captivating insight into the life of the author. We have edited this recording so that each of its 39 chapters is on its own track.

In this 2 CD audio book, author Ronald Ruden is quick to state his belief that alcoholism and other addictions are diseases, not the consequences of lack of willpower, and should be seen and treated as such. Addiction arises, he says, from an imbalance between the effects of dopamine ("gotta have it") and serotonin ("got it") and is a matter of degree, which accounts for why one person can be unaffected by a single drink while another, after a single drink, immediately and always goes on a binge. The first step in achieving biobalance, as Ruden calls it, is removing stress; the second involves disposing of denial. Those seeking biobalance must work hard at emphasizing what is positive, right, and good in their personalities and actions.

THE OTHER GREAT DEPRESSION - RICHARD LEWIS (MP3)
Because of its length, we are offering this recording in MP3 FORMAT. If you would like this recording in STANDARD AUDIO FORMAT please be aware that it is 8 CDs in length. Email us at sobrietytalks@aol.com if you’d like to obtain this recording in STANDARD AUDIO FORMAT.
At the age of 44, renowned comedian Richard Lewis found himself on a gurney in the ER, toxic with alcohol, and hallucinating from excess cocaine use. The same neuroses and dysfunctions that had been the basis for his successful stage persona and inspired his best material had, it seemed, turned on him. How he got here, how he finally got on the road to recovery, and how he copes with being Richard Lewis sober on a daily basis are the subjects of this very funny, deeply honest, inspiring, but very unsentimental recording. This is a journey through Lewis’ personal Inferno to eventual salvation.

THE VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCES - WILLIAM JAMES (2-CDs)
Written by William James, this is the audio version of the book that Ebby Thatcher gave to Bill Wilson while in Townes Hospital in New York way back in 1934. It is during this same hospital visit that Bill had his spiritual awakening. In this classic work William James (1842-1910) explains the psychological significance of religious experience, and finds it provides a ‘higher energy’ than ordinary consciousness. His description of spiritual conversion, mysticism and saintliness are illuminating. When he wrote The Varieties of Religious Experience, James was a renowned philosopher, psychologist, and educator. Today he is regarded as among the most original thinkers of his time. Professionally read by Eric Bauersfeld.
